Two Easy Ways to Care for Veneers

Porcelain Veneers Pittsford | Veneers Brighton NYCosmetic dentistry treatments have evolved substantially over time, and are now more popular than ever. While professional teeth whitening is one of the most common ways to revive the smile, there has also been an increase in interest for porcelain veneers in recent years. Porcelain veneers are “jackets” that are adhered to the front of teeth to recreate the visible surface. Individuals who want long-lasting brightness, in covering stubborn stains, or hiding a gap, crack, or chip may find what they need in this treatment that requires only two office visits. An aspect of knowing whether or not porcelain veneers are appropriate is understanding how to maintain these fixtures.

What to Know about Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain has historically been praised for being delicate. Early use of porcelain in dishes and other design elements has created a perception of “be careful” due to the fragile appearance of this material. Dental porcelain is different. The material used for dental restorations is durable and stain resistant. However, there is a potential for damage if care is not taken to support the bond between veneers and enamel. Simple tips for lasting strength include:

  • Practice good hygiene.

Veneers are ultra-thin sheets of porcelain that the dentist bonds to enamel, which means there is a border around the veneer where the bond must remain structurally sound. The tiniest ridge supplies an area for debris to collect and, where there is debris, there will be plaque. Oral care is crucial to the prevention of plaque and tartar buildup around the margins of a veneer or veneers. In particular, patients need to floss on a consistent basis. The use of a Waterpik may support the fullest extent of hygiene.

  • Chew food only.

This may sound logical, but we use our teeth so naturally to occasionally open a package or mindlessly chew on a pen cap that we may not even realize we are doing it. This type of usage can be the end of a porcelain veneer, and should be strictly avoided. Veneers are durable for normal biting and chewing. However, to bite and twist means placing extra stress on the tensile strength of the bond between veneer and tooth. So, in addition to not using teeth as package-openers, patients should avoid biting on food objects like jerky or taffy.
