Methods for fixing gaps between the teeth

When patients smile at others, they want their smile to be beautiful and memorable. When imperfection are present, including gaps between the teeth, it can have a negative impact on a patient’s overall appearance. This is when Dr. Thomas J. DeStefano and his team at DeStefano Dentistry may encourage patients to consider ways of repairing this gap.

What can be done about gapped teeth?

Teeth near the front of the smile that are gapped can make patients feel self-conscious about their appearance. With the use of certain cosmetic solutions, patients can disguise these issues and improve the overall look of their teeth and smile. Methods of treating gapped teeth may include:

  • Composite resin bonding – composite resin bonding is a special material that is commonly used on the teeth to repair imperfections. It is done in one appointment and can last many years before it needs to be replaced. This material is molded onto a tooth, cured with a light, and filed and polished to look like natural tooth enamel. When placed between anterior teeth, it can disguise gaps in-between them.
  • Porcelain veneers – another option to consider is that of porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic facings that our team will use to bond over the front of a natural tooth. This covers the tooth structure and provides a more aesthetic appearance to the smile. Veneers are more expensive than composite resin bonding, but can last longer and are not susceptible to staining and discoloration.
  • Orthodontic work – with braces, many patients can address not only gaps between the teeth, but misalignment and malocclusion all across their smile! Orthodontic work also helps in readjusting bite alignment to ensure a properly functioning smile. Not everyone is a candidate for orthodontic work, though patients should ask about it as an option for gapped teeth and decide if it is their best choice.
