At DeStefano Dentistry, patients in the community of Pittsford, NY who are seeking comprehensive care for their smile are welcome to book a consultation appointment with Dr. Thomas J. DeStefano to discuss restorative care such as the fabrication and placement of dental crowns.
Dental crowns and their role in dentistry
Dr. Thomas J. DeStefano and his team at DeStefano Dentistry are pleased to provide patients with solutions such as dental crowns when they need restorative care. Dental crowns are used in many different situations.
- Replacing missing teeth – a dental crown may be fabricated to place over the abutment of a dental implant to repair the smile after teeth have been lost or extracted.
- Covering broken/weakened teeth – if a tooth in the smile has had an injury that has caused breakage, or has undergone a procedure such as root canal therapy, it may be beneficial for a patient to have a dental crown placed over the tooth as an extra layer of strength and protection.
- Creating a dental bridge – dental crowns are used on both sides of a dental bridge to act as a tooth replacement solution. The crowns are fused with a pontic, or false tooth, that sits in the middle and fills the space left behind by the missing tooth.
How long does it take to obtain a dental crown?
Dental crowns take some time from start to finish to complete. First, the patient will consult with their dentist to determine if a dental crown fits their needs. Then, preparations are made, during which the dentist will file down the enamel of the tooth to prepare it for impressions. The molds made at this time are sent to a dental laboratory with instructions from the dentist to ensure the new restoration matches the color, shape, and size of the patient’s remaining teeth. Once the restoration comes back to the dental office, the dentist will bond it in place to restore the smile.
